Concept Explanation

Algebraic Identity -3

Product of two binomials (x+a) and (x+b)

large (x+a)(x+b)=x(x+b)+a(x+b)

                               large = x^{2}+xb+ax+ab

                               large =x^{2}+bx+ax+ab

                               large =x^{2}+ax+bx+ab

                   large =x^{2}+(a+b)x+ab

large because xb=bx

large therefore bx+ax=ax+bx

Thus,

         large (x+a)(x+b)=x^{2}+ax+bx+ab

                                           OR

         large (x+a)(x+b)=x^{2}+(a+b)x+ab

Illustration: Expand (x+3)(x+4)

Solution:     large =  large x^{2}+(3+4)x+3times 4

                    large =x^{2} +7x +12

Illustration: Expand (y+2)(y+5)

Solution:     y^{2}+(2+5)y+2(5)
